Westwind
An electronic flight bag for general aviation pilots, built by Jof Software LLC
Westwind is an iPad application that brings pre-flight weather briefing, aircraft performance, weight and balance, route planning, and an in-flight moving map into a single workflow for general aviation pilots flying under VFR and IFR.
It is designed for owner-pilots and renters of single- and light twin-engine aircraft who plan their own flights and want the briefing, the numbers, and the map to agree with one another.
What Westwind does
Pre-flight weather briefing
- Departure, destination, and alternate weather: METARs, TAFs, and model output statistics (MOS) evaluated at the planned departure and arrival times.
- NOTAMs for each airport on the route, and temporary flight restrictions.
- En-route hazards along the planned route: AIRMETs, G-AIRMETs, SIGMETs, convective SIGMETs, pilot reports, winds and temperatures aloft, freezing level, and gridded icing and turbulence risk at the planned altitude.
- Alternate evaluation against the 1-2-3 rule.
- Plain-language summaries of each phase of the flight, generated with the assistance of a third-party AI model and shown alongside the source observations and forecasts they summarize.
- Briefings are cached on the device so they remain available in the cockpit without an internet connection.
Aircraft performance, weight and balance
- Aircraft profiles with climb, cruise, and descent performance, including published reference data for common general aviation types with the source of each value shown.
- Altitude comparison for the planned route: time, fuel, and wind component at each candidate altitude, using forecast winds aloft.
- Weight and balance by loading station, with center-of-gravity checks against the aircraft's envelope.
Route planning
- Direct, airway, and waypoint routing, with departure, arrival, and approach procedures from FAA data.
- Distances computed on the WGS-84 ellipsoid; altitude suggestions that respect the hemispheric rule for the direction of flight.
- Offline readiness checks that warn before departure when airport details, diagrams, or approach plates for the route are not stored on the device.
Moving map
- VFR sectional and IFR enroute charts, airports with runway and taxiway diagrams, airspace, terrain, and obstacles, downloadable by region for use without an internet connection.
- Ownship position from the iPad's GPS or from a connected ADS-B receiver.
- ADS-B traffic and FIS-B weather displayed from a compatible portable receiver.
Flight plan filing (planned)
Filing and amending flight plans with flight service from within Westwind is planned, pending access to a flight service integration environment. It is not available in the app today.
Development status
Westwind is in pre-release development. It is used today in internal test builds, including in flight, and a TestFlight beta is planned. It is not yet available on the App Store, and it has no public users.
Company
Westwind is developed and owned by Jof Software LLC, a California limited liability company.
